Biodex: Prepare for Your Test
Biodex testing uses isokinetic dynamometry to assess joint- and muscle-specific strength, power, and control. Proper preparation ensures accurate results, participant comfort, and a safe testing experience.

Exercise & Recovery:
-
Avoid strenuous exercise for at least twenty-four hours before testing.
-
Light activity such as walking or mobility work is acceptable the day before.
-
Aim for adequate sleep the night prior to testing (7-9 hours).
Nutrition & Hydration:
-
Avoid eating a large meal within 1–2 hours of testing (light snacking is fine).
-
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine for at least twelve hours prior.
-
Arrive well hydrated, drinking water as needed before testing.
-
Bring a snack and hydration beverage for after the test.
Clothing & Equipment:
-
Wear flexible, comfortable clothing that allows full range of motion at the joint(s) being tested.
-
Changing room and lockers available for convenience.
What to Expect During Testing:
-
Your height and weight will be measured at the start of testing.
-
Testing begins with a 5-minute warm-up targeted to the joint(s) being tested.
-
You will be secured in the Biodex chair and asked to push or pull against the mechanical attachment for the joint being tested.
-
Testing occurs at multiple speeds to evaluate raw strength, functional strength, and power/explosiveness.
-
Both sides of the body are tested, and joint-specific setups (knee, shoulder, ankle, etc.) are customized to your needs.
-
Testing typically lasts 20–40 minutes depending on the type & number of joints assessed.
-
Staff will provide continuous instruction, monitoring, and support throughout the test.
Scheduling Considerations:
-
Schedule testing when well-rested and physically prepared.
-
Other high-intensity tests (Wingate, VO₂ max, Lactate Threshold, etc.) should be scheduled on separate days.
Considerations for Women:
-
Perceived exertion does fluctuate throughout the menstural cycle, though this doesn't typically alter performance related outcomes. For the most precise longitudinal tracking, testing during the same menstrual phase can be helpful but is not required.
