DEXA

DEXA: Prepare: 1. If you are currently pregnant or think you may be pregnant, we do NOT recommend completing this test. 2. Inform us if you have had X-rays or other diagnostic imaging involving radiation in the past 3 months. While DEXA scans use an extremely low dose of radiation, it is still a good idea to space out imaging procedures when possible. 3. We recommend three months between scans or checking with your healthcare provider if you have concerns about recent diagnostic imaging involving radiation you may have undergone. 4. Limit strenuous activity before your appointment. 5. Refrain from eating 2-3 hours before the test. If testing before 10:00 am, an overnight fast is useful 6. Try not to be over or underhydrated, as too much or too little can impact the readings. 7. Wear comfortable clothing that is not excessively baggy and that has no metal zippers, buttons, snaps, or fasteners for the test. What to Expect: 1. You will be asked to remove all metal jewelry, watches, rings, studs, etc. (if it is something that can’t be removed, it shouldn’t pose a problem). 2. Height and Weight will be taken before the test begins. 3. During the test you will be lying on your back, on a platform, as an X-ray scanner moves over you. 4. We have a room available for changing and storing clothes should you need it. 5. The total time for the test is between 10-15 minutes. Duration: 1. The DEXA test typically lasts
